Hugglescote: St John the Baptist, Hugglescote

St. John the Baptist's Church, Hugglescote was built in 1878 to replace the smaller chapel of St. James' on Dennis Street (the old cemetery can still be seen next to the public footpath). A chancel was added to the church in 1887.
Today, our church is still flourishing due to our very varied mixture of services and events. There is bound to be something to suit you, whether you prefer traditional services based on the old prayer book; a more modern-style, easy to follow service with hymns; or singing, dancing, dramatised Bible readings, playing percussion instruments and choosing your own hymns at the Family Services. Whatever you like, you are assured of a very warm welcome whenever you decide to visit us.
We work very closly with the young people in our parish. We have a company of the Church Lads' and Church Girls' Brigade, the only uniformed organisation in the Church of England, and a "U" Youth Group. Both of these are for a variety of ages and central to bringing the good news of the Gospel to the next generation. We also have a "Sunday Club" which meets in the community centre before going into church for the end of the service.
This is a very exciting time for St. John's, as we prepare for our new Rector, the Rev'd Olwen Woolcock, to join us.
St. John's as a building is very impressive and can be seen for many miles in all directions, acting as a local landmark and a focus for the community.
One of the most impressive features of our church building is its elaborate stained glass east window above the altar, in memory of the first vicar, Canon Broughton. It depicts the scene of the Resurrection.
St. John's also has a very good peal of eight bells, which people come from all around the country to ring.
For those interested in local history, St. John's has a typewritten, transcribed copy of the baptisms, marriages and burials in the parish since the 16th century.
