PARKING:
There are four main car parks in Assisi: 

Piazza Giovanni Paolo II (closest parking to the Basilica of St Francis)  - prior to reconstruction (completed in October 2009) it was called Piazza Unita d'Italia.  Buses park at ground level while cars use the underground facility.  To get to St Leonard's or the main square of PIAZZA DEL COMMUNE, take the curved road which leads to the Basilica and overlooks the car park.  After 100m you will go through a 'gate'.  After 20m go straight across the road junction and head up the slope - this leads diirectly to St Leonard's (about 500m on the right) and Piazza del Commune (about 600m)

Mojano multi-storey - this is  a new car park - and very beautiful too - half way up the hill from Piazza Giovanni Paolo II to Porta Nuova.  Probably the closest to the centre of town but the final escalator has not yet been installed 

Porta Nuova - south end of town but a relatively flat and nice walk past Santa Chiara church

Piazza Matteotti - south end of town at the top of the hill - you can reach the centre using the underground walkway and lift.

Please read the Notices in the car park when you park because some car parks are closed at night and the rates are cheaper for long term parking if you pay when you park.

Except for those who park at Piazza Giovanni Paolo II, after you have parked head towards the main square PIAZZA DEL COMMUNE.
