St John's Church, Bilton was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, and this church is a notable and extremely distinguished example of the work of this prolific but excellent Victorian architect.
Built in 1855 with money donated by William Sheepshanks, the church has a west tower, a nave with a north aisle and a south aisle with a porch, and also a chancel.
The nave arcade piers show both naturalistic and stiff-leaf foliage, and this detailing is evident everywhere in the church.
Consecration of the building took place on 12th November 1857.
Major restoration work and re-ordering took place in 1967. The impressive organ case was moved to the west end, and can now be seen to best advantage. An oak screen was moved from the west end to close off the east end.
St John's Church is a listed building Grade 2* and St John's Church Hall is also a listed building.
St John's Church joined with St Luke's Church to form the Parish of Bilton St John & St Luke on 1st October 1996.
