Boulton St. Mary's as the church is usually called today, was formerly a chapel built about 1090 by the Sacheverell family who were lords of the manor of Boulton at that time. Whilst the church has undergone considerable alteration and extension it still retains some of the early Norman features. Visitors are often pleasantly surprised by the sight of a beautiful old church situated in a lane mostly lined with semi-detached houses built in the 1930's to accommodate the growing community.
Today Boulton still retains its separate parish identity but as it is within the postal district of Alvaston, the area is often regarded as being of Alvaston.
The main entrance on Boulton Lane is through the lychgate which is a memorial to those of the parish who gave their lives in the Great War, 1914 - 1919.
