Baptisms: A guide for people interested in Baptism at Bridestowe

We look forward to welcoming families to church for baptism. It's always a time of joyful celebration, and a moment when those being baptised are especially blessed by God. The service is friendly and informal. We usually hold our Baptisms during Sunday services, though in exceptional circumstances they can be held at other times, by arrangement. Adults seeking baptism are welcome. A child should usually be baptised in their or their parents’ parish church - you can check which parish you live in by entering your postcode on the www.achurchnearyou.com home page.

People often have questions they want to ask about the service so please contact Revd John Davies [email/phone number on the Contact Us page] if you want to talk things over beforehand. If for any reason, after making your booking, you decide not to go ahead with the arrangements please let us know as soon as possible. There are some points you might like to bear in mind.

Choosing Godparents

It is usual to have three godparents, two of the same sex as the baptism candidate and one of the opposite sex, but to have one godfather and one godmother is sufficient. Parents may be godparents of their own children provided that the baptism candidate has at least one other godparent. Church law requires that godparents should be baptised and confirmed but the minister does have some discretion, so please feel able to discuss this if necessary.

Parents and Godparents of children should ask themselves:

Are you prepared to the best of your ability to give the child a Christian upbringing within the church family?
Will you help the child to learn to pray and to attend public worship regularly?
Will you encourage the child in due time to come to Confirmation and Communion?

Please download the Baptism Application Form, complete it to the best of your knowledge and return it to Revd John Davies [at the address on the Contact Us page, or by email]. Please note that a Baptism Service is not confirmed until you have had this application accepted.
