St George’s Church is the Parish Church for the Kemp Town area of Brighton, including the former parishes of St Anne's and St Mark's. It welcomes the many diverse and interesting people who make up the community in Kemp Town and invites them to join the Church both for worship and for the social life which it has to offer.
The people who attend worship in the Church come from many different traditions – some have been born into the worshipping community at St George with St Anne & St Mark, whilst others have come from many different parts of the United Kingdom, and indeed different parts of the world. They bring with them not only glimpses of different Anglican traditions, but also the rich heritage from different denominations such as the Methodist Church and the Roman Catholic Church. They have found their home here in the church family at St George’s.
Our Church was built in 1824 for Thomas Reed Kemp by Charles Augustus Busby to service the newly built Kemp Town estate. Later, Queen Adelaide worshipped here when in Brighton, and donated the magnificent silver, which is displayed inside the Church. The Peel family crypt is below the Church and was renovated with Lottery Heritage Funding in recent years as part of the work to build the Kemp Town Community Centre. Here you will also find the Crypt Cafe and St George's Neighbourhood Nursery.
