Christ Church has a lively multi-cultural congregation. A member of Inclusive Church we seek to be "A Church for Everyone" and we welcome everyone to worship with us or visit us during the week. Our worship style is liberal catholic and seeks to reflect and respond to the very mixed make up of the parish and congregation.
Two other congregations use the building, helping to meet the worship needs of the different communities in the area.
The church has a long history of community invovlement; the adjoining side street, Mowll Street, is named after a previous vicar of the parish. During the last years of the 19th century and on into the 20th the Rev'd William Rutley Mowll, a noted Anglican evangelical, oversaw the continued development of the church primary school, the building of the present church building and halls on an enlarged site, and a large amount of pastoral and outreach work in the local community. More recently a period of growth and revival during the 1980's and 90's drawing directly on impetus given by the Faith in the City report saw further developments. Under the leadership of the Rev'd Nigel Godfrey considerable alterations and additions were made to the building to allow it to house a lay community and a number of projects seeking to address the multiple needs of the local community. Two of these projects, the 'Charity Shop' and the 'Cafe van Gogh' continue today .
The Charity Shop, run entirely by volunteers, is currently raising funds for youth work and community work with older people. The Church and Charity Shop are open every day during the week from 11am-4pm.
The Cafe van Gogh, located on the Mowll Street side of the church, was first operated by the church and then by Toucan Employment. Currently closed awaiting some major refurbishment, it is hoped that it will reopen for business next year (2014).
We can't display parish boundaries at the moment. We'll put them back as soon as possible.
