The grace and peace of God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you!
There has been a place of Christian worship on or near the site of the present Saint Modwen's church since the 7th Century, when Modwen, an Irish noblewomen on her way to Rome, stopped in Burton with her companions and established a house of prayer on Andressey Island in the River Trent. An Abbey was founded nearby in 1002 and the current church, a Grade I listed building, was built to replace the abbey in 1726 when the latter became unsafe. You can see some pictures of the present building by following the link to the right.
Although our regular Sunday congregation is comparatively small, as Burton's original parish church we play an important role in civic life, hosting major events such as the town's annual Remembrance Sunday service; and we are usually open on a Saturday morning, when refreshments are available. We also have a well-regarded Church of England (Voluntary Controlled) Primary School, Holy Trinity, about a mile away on Wetmore Road.
We do all this because as Christians we are convinced that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus reveal God's purpose for the life he gives us, and open the way to eternal life in his presence. This gives meaning to our lives – a meaning we are anxious to share with others. If what you have read here appeals to you, please join us, or for more information contact us through this webpage. Our Vicar is also Vicar of the Parish of Saint Aidan & Saint Paul, Burton.
Historic records for Saint Modwen's have been deposited at Staffordshire Record Office, where they are available for consultation by the public. These include the parish registers of baptisms 1538-2001, marriages 1538-1980 and burials 1538-1914. More recent records remain with the church.
