A millenium ago two manors formed the village, Campesse and Ash where the present church stands. The Church was built around 1312, with a tower at 76 feet topped with awooden spire. The tower contains four restored bells, the earliest dating back to 1601.the most interesting features are a brass of a Rector Alexander Inghllysh 1505, armourial shields of Thomas de Brotherton and the Mowbray family dating back to the C15, further C18 family memorials including one to the Ist Viscount Ullswater, Speaker of the House of Commons from 1905 to 1921, the longest serving Speaker. A restoration took place in the 1780's and the Victorians 'modernised' the Church interior and removed many features including a gallery in the tower. However the Church is quiet and tranquil and welcomes visitors at any time during the year.
In September 2010 the bells were removed for restoration and three new bells to be cast so that we have a peel of six bells. Sadly three were stolen from Bridport amongst others that were stolen. We are pleased to report that the bells have been replaced and are now back at the church and will be ready for a a wedding on December 18th.
