St Clements, Castle Bromwichmeets in a fairly modern (1960s) multi-purpose building, originally constructed to be the Church Hall. So, no steeple or stained glass... Instead a congregation of about 60 people seeking to move forward in worship, discipleship and mission.
The church serves a parish of about 12,000 people. A third live in Castle Bromwich, a fairly affluent area; whilst the remainder of the population come from the less affluent Smiths Wood Community, which is an Urban Priority Area (UPA). Both communities are well represented in the congregation and its leadership.
The church has been exploring the use of multi-media in its services, and uses a variety of contemporary Christian worship songs alongside more traditional hymns.
People are invited to explore the Christian Faith through Start! and Alpha Courses. These offer an open and relaxed environment in which participants are invited to ask their own questions, express their own hopes and misgivings, and, if they so desire, take the first few steps of faith with Jesus themselves.
Children and young people are catered for through the Boys and Girls Brigade that meets every week at St Clements. The church is also looking to develop other opportunities for youth and childrens work that will benefit those from Christian families, as well as others from the wider community.
Many groups make use of the church building for everything from street dance to slimming. Two parent and toddler groups meet during every week. We hope the church will increasingly become a local community “hub”, where people from the neighbourhood can find a welcome and a sense of belonging.
