Set on a hilltop, surrounded by magnificent views of the Dorset
countryside, the ancient church of Chalbury is one of those
special places which are hard to find these days – beautiful, quiet
and deeply spiritual. It was already 300 years old in 1588 when
a bonfire was lit beside it as part of the chain on hilltops from
Plymouth to London to warn of the approaching Spanish Armada.
The interior is remarkable, with medieval and Georgian windows
allowing plenty of sunlight into the simple Nave and Chancel.
The original 18th Century box pews, three-decker pulpit and
musicians gallery have been recently repainted and this small
church is always welcoming whenever you may visit.
