The Church of St Hieritha at Chittlehampton was once a great pilgrimage church. It is very early foundation, possibly eighth century and completely rebuilt again between 1470 and 1520. From 1586 until 1905 the church was under the trusteeship of a group of benefactors known as Feoffees. They administered the church with funds from their properties they rented out locally.
The north and south transepts each have a magnificent memorial to a former benefactor. In the north are the Giffard family and the south Rolle family.
The present church building is largely as it was after a major restoration completed in 1872. Among the enhancements was the reredos, which shows The Last Supper fashioned in mosaic and forming a perfect backdrop to the altar. This masterpiece of artistic work had been on display in the Great Exhibition in London in 1850. The kneelers embroidered mostly by the parishoners are also well worth viewing.
