Julian Prayer Meetings
God, of your goodness, give me yourself, for you are sufficient for me.
I cannot properly ask anything less, to be worthy of you.
If I were to ask less I should always be in want.
In you alone, do I have all.
Julian of Norwich
What is a Julian Prayer Meeting, and what do we do? We 'do' very little in fact!
An ecumenical group meets monthly for silent, contemplative prayer, in our case, in the Lady Chapel at St Dunstan's Parish Church,Mayfield, mid-morning, for just half an hour. We sit in a circle with a lighted candle, picture or flowers in the middle as a focus. We take it in turns to lead this time of silent contemplative prayer. The silence and stillness brings us closer to God who is so often bombarded by words; so listening to Him has an extraordinarily peaceful effect, we find. It can help to repeat a short silent prayer or even one word to keep our minds focussed. The leader takes us into the silence with perhaps some music and a short reading or prayer. The time flies all too quickly and we are led out with music again, and another reading or prayer. We are left with a deep feeling of peace, which can last for some time.
The power of contemplative prayer of a group of people is surprising in its effect. 'I always feel fitter to face the world once more', writes one participant - to 'get off' that world for just half an hour in the midst of our busy, stressful lives and listen to God for a change, can soon become a habit! Do come!
