I AM: Last Sunday our reading from Chapter 10 of John’s gospel recorded the words of Jesus, “I am the Good Shepherd. This week from chapter 15, Jesus says, “I am the true vine.” These are just two of the seven “I Am” statements that appear in John’s gospel. Interestingly, though, the gospel is not the first time that one of these “I Am” statements was used in Scripture. The first time it appears is in the Old Testament. In Exodus 13:4, when God told Moses to go to Pharaoh and demand that the Hebrew people be allowed to leave their slavery in Egypt,  He said, tell Pharaoh, “I Am has sent you.” Since then, God has revealed himself to us in many ways but most importantly through his Son, Jesus Christ. So, when Jesus used “I Am” to describe Himself to His disciples, He was referring back to this expression declaring that He is the I AM. John demonstrated that the “I Am” in Exodus was now physically standing in front of people, ready to be their Shepherd, their Door to the Father, their Life, their Vine, their Light, their Bread of Life, and their Truth.

Heavenly Father, thank you for revealing Yourself to us through Your Son Jesus. He continues to reveal Himself to us all the time. Too often Lord we miss Him. Open our eyes Lord to every appearance of Your Son in our lives. Amen!

Please remember in your prayers: Katie, Barbara Sharocks, Tony Ryan, Louise Clark, Mark Price, Alan Morris, Dean, Rev Jane Everett, Paul Sumner, Norman Higgins, John McLellan and Chris Shuttleworth.
