St Peter's, Calow is a Victorian (Grade II listed) church prominently situated immediately to the east of Chesterfield on the main road to Bolsover. It is always open on Mondays, Wednesdays 9.30 to 3 p.m. and Sundays from 9.30am until 11.30pm, often for longer, and on other days as well. It serves a community of around 3,000 people .
St Peter's has always been in the catholic tradition, and the PCC have recently requested that alternative episcopal oversight be granted by The Bishop of Derby, and the ethos is best described as Anglo Catholic. Vestments, incense and bells are used at the 11am Sung Mass and the blessed sacrament is perpetually reserved, traditional hymns predominate .
Between a quarter and a third of the regular congregation live outside the parish, but the majority of those are former residents. Patients and staff from the nearby Royal Hospital bring variety to the congregation from time to time.
