Th4Th for May 30th Last Friday, May 24th, was the day in the Anglican Cycle of Prayer when we are asked to commemorate John Wesley and his younger brother, Charles, the fathers of Methodism. Simon told us a little about them during Morning Prayer on that day. During my career I spent some years working for the Methodist Publishing House and while I was there the 250th Anniversary of what became known as John Wesley’s “Aldersgate experience” occurred. Throughout the Methodist churches there were many commemorative services at this time. It was at a meeting in Aldersgate that John’s life changed and he later wrote on his diary that “. . . About a quarter before nine . . .I felt my heart strangely warmed . . .“ This was the beginning of his new ministry. He felt that God had moved him to share his personal commitment to salvation and encourage others to do the same. Although both brothers were ordained Anglican priests, John felt that the Church of England had become too formulaic and hidebound by rules, regulations and practices without an individual personal connection to God, for example, at that time parsons would collect livings to maximise their income but never actually set foot inside the churches. Instead, they paid curates a pittance to conduct the services. Wesley famously said, “The World is my parish.” He ignored church boundaries. travelling the length and breadth of the country preaching and teaching. An eloquent and charismatic preacher, his ministry was complimented by the six thousand-odd hymns that Charles wrote. He did not intend to create a new denomination, rather wanted to make the church he served more Christ-centred. Wesley’s Spirit-led, very different ministry not only gave birth to Methodism, it also had a knock-on effect on some of the practices of the Church of England. We pray that, again led by the Spirit, that the changes we make to our church going forward will be those that God wants us to make.
