Christians have worshipped on this site close to the High Street of the busy market town of Dorking for more than a thousand years. The present church - in the Victorian Gothic style with its high spire visible from miles around -was completed in 1877.
St Martin's aims to be a place of spiritual, intellectual and emotional refreshment. We are an inclusive church offering a warm welcome to everyone.
St Martin’s is a diverse group of people at different stages in our Christian pilgrimage, called to celebrate God’s presence. We embrace a range of worship styles which reflect our broad Anglican tradition. We are engaged both in developing our spiritual life together, and in using our gifts and skills to support our community, both within the church and outside it. We share our building with Dorking Methodist Church, and at major festivals we share in worship together.
At the heart of the life of the church is the belief that God is not remote and uncaring. Together we are discovering that Jesus Christ is not just a character from history, and that when we put Jesus at the centre of our lives the world begins to make sense. We want to learn to live with respect for creation, to love God, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil. We see ourselves as part of God’s family, and like all families whose members have diverse interests, we don’t always see eye to eye - but we believe we can learn from each other, so that trusting each other, we can move forward together.
