St Wilfrid's Church is a young and outward looking Anglican church with a strong mission focus.
We are a 'Church without walls' and we meet for worship on Sunday mornings in the hall of a local Special School (Portland College), and at other times for social activities and services in a variety of places.
We are family orientated and have a large Sunday School comprising four groups: Creche, Junior Sunday School, Sunday School and Junior Church, which run year-round during term-time.
Sunday morning Worship at St Wilfrid's takes a variety of formats. Generally speaking 1st and 3rd Sundays are Holy Communion, 2nd Sundays are Praise Services, 4th Sundays are All-age Worship and where there is a 5th Sunday we try to vary our style. All of our services are family orientated and child friendly.
We also hold a service of Holy Communion every Thursday morning at 9:30am in Croftside House, Hall Farm and, on the second Sunday of each month, an evening service of Holy Communion at the same venue. The evening service begins at 6pm and is open to all.
Refreshments are served after our Sunday morning and Thursday morning services, giving an opportunity for fellowship. New people are always made welcome in our church and we pride ourselves on the warm and friendly ethos of our church family.
We offer Baptism either during our morning worship or just after our morning service, by arrangement with the parish priest. Enquiries about baptism should be made, in the first instance, to Rev'd Judith Morgan (0191) 522 7639.
Weddings and funeral services are held at our neighbouring Parish Church of St Matthew,Silksworth.
Once a month the churches of the Sunderland South Locality (St Matthew's, Silksworth, St Paul's, Ryhope and St Wilfrid's, Doxford) join together for a Healing Service. This Month's service will be held on Sunday 24th July at 6pm at St Paul's Church, Ryhope. Preacher: Rev'd Judith Morgan. All are welcome to attend.
St Wilfrid's Fairtrade stall is due to make a welcome return to our Church on Sunday 25th September, 2011, 'under new management' by the Jackson family. The stall is non-profit making and is simply a way of making fairly traded goods available to people and of raising awareness of the need for fairness in the marketplace. The stall will be held monthly on All-Age Worship Sundays.
Our social events include many trips to the local Empire Theatre in Sunderland and tickets are block-booked at discounted prices for Church members and their friends.
On Thursday evenings, St Wilfrid's holds a coffee and crafts evening in Croftside House, from 7pm - 8:30pm. This event is open to everyone, whether resident at Croftside or not. We are actively engaged in a number of activities including: Knitting 'Teddies for Tragedies' (to be sent to children in areas where there has been a humanitarian disaster), manufacturing birthday and other greetings cards, making a range of craft items for sale at our Christmas and Spring Fayres, knitting and crocheting a number of goods such as blankets, baby hats and children's jumpers (which are sent to various countries where relief aid is needed), making 'Sunday School Reward Cards' (which are sent to Missionaries running a church in Zimbabwe, for distribution to the 400 children in their Sunday School), and sending cards of encouragement to Christians around the world who are imprisoned because of their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. We are always on the lookout for new projects and new ideas are always welcome. Come along and try your hand at something new. Drop in for a coffee. Meet new folks and have a chat. We'd love to see you there .
We produce a regular monthly Parish Magazine and welcome articles from local groups and individuals (email MorgJud@aol.com for further details). The deadline for articles for inclusion in the August edition of the Magazine is Sunday, 24th July.
St Wilfrid's is served by an Anglican Priest, the Rev'd Judith Morgan MA, who is also the Missioner for Wearmouth Deanery.
