"A Place where prayer has been valid". This is how TS Eliott describes the church at Little Gidding in Cambridgeshire. It could apply to many of our ancient parish churches, including Easingwold. This is where the people of our small market town have come for over a thousand years to be baptised, to be joined in marriage and at the end of their lives to be buried. And most of all, week by week, to put themselves, their worries and concerns, before God.
At the centre of Christian worship is the Communion or Eucharist -not just another form of service, but the one Christ himself commanded us to follow on the night before his death. That's why the Eucharist is celebrated here each Sunday, either quietly and traditionally or with hymns and other music. There are other forms of worship too, together with talks on different themes throughout the year. There are children's workshops, a visiting team and much else. But at the heart of it all is prayer. (To the right, as you enter the church, is a chapel which contains material for prayer and a book for prayer requests.) This building is not a museum, it's at the heart of a living worshipping community.
