St. Michael's Church, East Buckland
St Michael’s Church is in the middle of East Buckland , a tiny village, on a hill and commanding a view down towards Charles Bottom, with Exmoor and the ‘Bamfylde Clump’ in the distance. This famous copse gave its name to West Buckland School in ‘To Serve Them All My Days’ – the novel written by R F Delderfield about the School and the First World War, in memory of his time here as a student.
The parish itself probably collects together some 20+ homesteads in the village and some scattered farmsteads – but the church is also the traditional place of worship for the School, which is just half a mile away. The School Chaplain takes many of our services, and the boarding community (70-100+ pupils) join us for most of these.
Otherwise, we are a farming community. Although we are independent, with the services of the School Chaplain, we are currently forging links with our neighbouring churches.
