About the Church
The Parish of East Greenwich is the Church of England community of East Greenwich and Westcombe Park. From the establishment of the Team Ministry in 1977 the parish has operated as two distinct districts, each with its own church, Christ Church, East Greenwich and St. George's, Westcombe Park. [St.George's can be found elsewhere on this website.] In addition the parish has responsibility towards a third district, the Greenwich Peninsula, which is being redeveloped over the next twenty years, and has the support of a multifaith chaplaincy. Meridian Delta Ltd. is in overall charge of the development of the Greenwich Peninsula, and is providing worship space there in the future. Through the chaplaincy the Vicar of Christ Church contributes to the parish's involvement in this project.
The Church Building :
The modern building of Christ Church, designed by John Brown and Robert Kerr, was completed in May 1989 as part of the then Christ Church Forum Project [now The Forum @ Greenwich]. It is attached to the north and west side of the existing Victorian church (built 1847 - 1849) which has now been deconsecrated.
Christ Church is in a central position within the district of East Greenwich, providing comfortable and appropriate seating for up to 150 people, and allowing attractive space and flexibility to fit the needs of today's congregation. The older church building to which the new Christ Church has been added, has been refurbished and is now used as a busy focal point and base for community activities and organisations. This is managed throughout the week by The Forum@Greenwich. As you will no doubt have realised, Christ Church is truly at the heart of the community.
The Worshipping Community are welcoming, friendly and supportive. There are roughly nine thousand inhabitants in the parish and the names currently on the Church Family List reflect the racial diversity of the community. We celebrate festivals with traditional social activities e.g. Harvest Supper, a Christmas Fair, and The Christ Church Players provide entertainment for groups in the area. A Home Group meets regularly at the vicarage. There is also a Mission Focus Group which keeps the parish informed of the USPG Missionary Project in Bangladesh which we support.
Pastoral Care and support are offered throughout the whole of the Christ Church district, and enquiries for Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals, or anything else, are welcomed by the vicar - tel. 020 8853 5950.
Christ Church School is a thriving Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School with approximately two hundred pupils. There are close links between church and school. The vicar leads weekly acts of collective worship, and the school uses the church for annual festivals and special occasions during the course of the year, and as a resource for curricular activities.
Ecumenical activities:
Christ Church is a member of the local Churches Together which provides opportunities for shared worship and support in Christian service. In particular, Churches Together organises an annual Memorial Service for the bereaved. Christ Church is also used by the United Reformed Church. The URC holds a monthly Sunday service at 7.00pm offering alternative forms of worship.
Visitors and newcomers to the area are warmly welcome at any of our Sunday services.
