We are part of the world-wide Anglican Communion within the Church of God, in the Province of Canterbury and Diocese of Ely, the Archdeaconry and Cambridge and Deanery of Shelford. For over 600 years St Mary's has been Great Shelford's parish church, and our present building is by no means the first to have stood on this serious earth and holy ground. Though we are sited towards the edge of the village, next door to our Church school, we aspire to be a church at the heart of the community and with the community at its heart. Our worship is mainstream Anglican in the liberal (affirming) catholic tradition, maintaining, we hope, a judicious balance of Word and Sacrament through a strong preaching ministry and a rich devotional life. All churches claim to be friendly, but hospitality is truly central to our ministry. As the poster in our church porch declares: if you are curious and have come to see; if you are weary and have come to rest; if you are grateful and have come to give thanks; if you are hurting and have come for comfort; if you are listening and have come to pray; if you are seeking and have come for answers - we welcome you in Christ's name. Beyond all else, we aim under God to be 'a serious house' -
In whose blent air all our compulsions meet,
Are recognised, and robed as destinies.
And that much never can be obsolete,
Since someone will forever be surprising
A hunger in himself to be more serious,
And gravitating with it to this ground,
Which, he once heard, was proper to grow
wise in ...
Philip Larkin, 'Church-Going'
Our ministry team comprises the Incumbent, whose details are below; our Assistant Curate, The Revd Stephen Anderson; two Licensed Lay Ministers, Mrs Maureen Dobson and Mr Nick Pett; and our Churchwardens, Mr Bob Doel and Mrs Mary Lester. We are increasingly looking to collegiate ministry with our neighbouring parishes of Harston, Hauxton and Newton. The Incumbent is Rural Dean and a Surrogate for the granting of marriage licences.
