St George's Church was built in 1852 by Colonel Charles Hannington of St George's House, following a disagreement between himself and the Rector. Little Park chapel was licensed as a private Church of England chapel in 1867 and, from late 1875 was served by Col Hannington's son James as curate-in-charge until he went as a missionary to Africa in 1882. He was consecrated as first Bishop of East Equatorial Africa at the age of 37 in 1884, returned to Africa and, on 29th October 1885, he was martyred on the orders of the Kabaka of Buganda as he approached the most distant country of his diocese. He left the chapel to his brother Samuel who, in 1892, presented it to the Ecclesiastical Commissioner and it was consecrated by Bishop Tuffnell as a chapel-of-ease to the Parish Church. St George's Church then served the parish for a further 116 years. In 2008 the PCC regretfully came to the decision that it could no longer justify the expense of the upkeep of 2 churches in the village and applied for the closure of St George's for public worship.
The final service was held on the feast of the martyrdom of James Hannington in October 2008 in the presence of the parish family and of many members of the Hannington family.
