Christ Church Lothersdale was built and consecrated in 1838, after years of discussion between the Parishioners of Lothersdale, the Vicar of Carleton and Christ Church Oxford. The cost of building the church was about £800, with the cost of furniture and consecration taking this to £1000. Due to the destitute condition of the population, funds were generously donated by Rev Levett, Vicar of Carleton, the land given by the Earl of Burlington.

The key protagonist in creating the Parish of Lothersdale from Carleton & Kildwick was John Sidgwick who took up residence at Stone Gappe in 1827.During his residency, John Sidgwick employed Charlotte Bronte as governess to his children.

The first incumbent priest was the Rev Edward Carter who resided at Lower Leys Farm until the parsonage was built. Day & Sunday schools took place in the gardeners cottage at Stone Gappe.

The Jubilee Service of Lothersdale Church was held on Monday 22nd October 1888, at which the Bishop of Ripon was preacher.

In 1892 the church was paid a visit by the Archbishop of Canterbury, who himself had holidayed at Stone Gappe as a boy.In 1894 the Duke of Devonshire presented 640 square yards of land to enlarge the churchyard.

During 1904 much needed improvements, including the installation of a new boiler, were undertaken. On October 12th 1912, the Bishop of Richmond dedicated the new vestry, the organ, choirstalls and the Parker Memorial Pulpit. The total cost was £658.

In 1938 £500 was raised in celebration of the Centenary, and the church was redecorated and a new west door of English oak was installed. Over 200 people were present at the special service held on the 22nd October.

The installation of two memorial windows took place in 1951, one dedicated to the Spencer family, the second to Mr H Riddiough.

The Church has some fine Stained Glass Windows depicting 'The Adoration of our Lord' (east window) and our Lord healing the sick. (south window)The windows in the Nave depict our Lord on The Cross with three women at the foot and Jesus in the garden with an angel overhead.

A number of benefactors including Mary Hayes, Mary Wood and Jean Stanley have bequethed sums of monies to the Church in more recent years which has allowed enlargement of the Vestry and installation of a hearing loop system, which have proven a great benefit to todays community.
