Welcome
As the parish priest, I welcome you warmly to the parish family of St Mary’s. This website aims to give you a flavour of our life together, although it can be no substitute for paying us a visit.
For centuries the sight of St Mary's Church on the Blackwater has heralded harbour and rest for seafarers returning home. This sacred space has offered stillness and recollection to all who have made their way here. Today St Mary's Church is home to a growing Christian community, whose aim is to be open, generous and inclusive
St Mary’s is a Church of England parish church drawing upon the rich resources of the catholic tradition. We are entering an exciting phase in the life of our church as we seek to reach out to the community. Our services are joyful and dignified, enabling us to encounter the mystery of God. We now have a flourishing Junior Church and mixed choir as well as a range of other activities for all to share in.
There is clearly a spiritual hunger and a need for space to explore and question. I believe that what we are offering is the opportunity for seasoned travellers and beginners alike to discover the depths of the spiritual life. Together we are exploring a way of living which is inspired by joyful worship, takes seriously the interior life, the challenges of peace-making and building an inclusive community .
Central to our life together is the celebration of the Eucharist. In this meal, begun by Jesus, we share bread and wine in remembrance of all that God has done for us and continues to do in the world today. We celebrate the story of Jesus' life, death and resurrection and in doing so discover that we can become the people God made us to be.
Whether you are a beginner, seasoned traveller or simply wanting to explore the spiritual life you will find a welcome at St Mary's Church. This website aims to give a flavour of the parish family, but it can be no substitute for experiencing this yourself. I look forward to welcoming you soon.
With love and prayers,
Fr Louis Darrant,
Rector
