St James's church is situated on Whitehall Road in New Farnley.
There has been a church on this site since 1863 when four of the Armitage family of Farnley Hall, who had founded the Farnley Iron Co. in 1844 and built the houses that became the community of New Farnley, erected a corrugated iron church. This was known locally as the iron or tin church.
The present church was built in 1959 to replace the previous church which was in need of major repairs.
Today it is a multi-purpose building used for weekly church services, various social and community events and used by other local groups.
