David's December 2007 Letter
Dear family, About six months ago we had a letter from our Electricity Company. They said that they wanted to change the meter at St George’s House. This seemed like a reasonable request, so Stuart K phoned them up and arranged a date for them to come. He and David S arrived at ten past eight in the morning… only to discover that the engineer had been and gone. Oh well. We phoned the Company and they sent us another letter with a new date, (in late August). This time, I volunteered to be on duty so I arrived at ten to eight. At five o’clock, I phoned the number on the letter – the man wasn’t coming. Oh (guess my word)! This time we didn’t bother phoning the company, but we received another letter anyway, saying that an engineer would call at the end of October. This time he did: at about ten o’clock in the morning (hurrah). He had a look at the meter, sucked his teeth for a bit and then said he couldn’t change it. Someone else will have to call… Oh (choose your own word)! Now, guess what – we’ve received another letter. A new man will be calling on December 11th … but will he? And if he comes, will he do anything? We shall see. Actually, this is all a bit ‘adventy’. In advent we prepare towards Jesus arriving as a baby on Christmas day but we also prepare for the day when he will come again and life, as we know it, will change out of all recognition. Some people think that Jesus is like the electricity engineer – that he won’t really come… and that even if he does, nothing will change. There is a difference though. When Jesus says he’ll so something – he does it. With love, David.
