About our Parish

The church of St. Lawrence at Rushton Spencer is not easy to find, but well worth the effort. It is a Grade II listed building and a medieval and architectural treasure, parts of it dating back to the 13th. century. It is thought that it was built by the monks of Dieulacres Abbey in Leek although there is no documentation to verify this.
Its remote position, surrounded by farmland, suggests that it may have been built as a chapelry in which the working monks could stop and say their offices.
The hamlet of Rushton James was also close by, but it was probably still a secluded and wooded area 600 years ago.
It is known locally as "The Chapel in the Wilderness" and is a fine example of a medieval timber frame building.
It is well loved by its parishioners and there is a service every Sunday. Its small congregation have kept this beautiful building in extremely good condition and continue to maintain it to provide the parish with a place in which to reflect and to give praise to Almighty God.
