St. Anselm's Church is situated in the bustling heart of Hayes Town which is semi pedestrianised and has a mixture of residential houses and industrial sites. We strive to serve well and offer pastoral care and support to our community.
The church is dedicated to Anselm the son of a wealthy family who was born in Aosta, Northern Italy in 1033. Anselm's relationship with his Father was not harmonious, but his Mother played a very influential part in his early life. Before he was 15 years old he sought admission to a Benedictine Monastery but was refused, though his intellect and spirituality brought him rapid advancement, eventually he entered the Abbey at Bec (a Danish word for brook) as a novice in 1060. Upon the death of Herluin the founder at Bec, - the modern name is Bec-Helloin as a tribute to him - Anselm was elected Abbot in 1078 and under his leadership it grew and flourished dramatically. Herluin was originally a Norman knight who decided to devote himself to the religious life. People flocked to the Abbey to indulge in the teachings of Herluin and Lanfranc but a greater glory was to come with the arrival of Anselm, now our Patron Saint. Anselm had a turbulent time with King William Rufus, the situation continued under the next monarch Henry the 1st who were determined to maintain jurisdiction over the church. This caused Anselm for the second time to live in exile from 1103 to 1107, but he became a Monk, Abbot, Philosopher, Theologian and Doctor of the Church. In 1093 he succeeded Lanfranc, - who was Prior at the Abbey in Bec - and against his wishes was enthroned Archbishop of Canterbury, a position that had been vacant for four years. The Abbey at Bec although now in ruins, has given Canterbury three Archbishops, Lanfranc, Anselm and Theobald as well as many Primates. The shrine inside the church shows Anselm refusing the crozier indicating his reluctance to accept the primacy of The Church of England. Anselm died in 1109 aged 76, was Canonized in 1494 and named Doctor of the Church in 1720. Today, Christianity owes so much to the teachings of St. Anselm, his Feast Day is on April 21st. The Coat Of Arms for Hayes and Harlington incorporates a silver pall which comes from that in the Arms of the See of Canterbury. In 790 King Offa - a powerful monarch - granted land in Hayes to the Archbishop of Canterbury and for more than seven centuries Hayes was closely associated with the See. Among the Archbishop's of Canterbury who resided in Hayes was Anselm our Patron Saint.
St. Anselm's is well served by various bus routes which stop nearby, the mainline railway and station is situated about 500 yards from the Church. Heathrow Airport is about 3 miles away which also provides employment for some of our parishioners, we hold a Thursday Mass at 10a.m. to accommodate these working arrangements for those people on shifts. Although we do not have a Parish Magazine at the moment we do publish a weekly bulletin, which gives details of our activities and hopefully will encourage parishioners to support THEIR church. Any enquiries relating to St Anselm's Church please contact Fr. Danny at the address or telephone number below. If you need to contact us by e-mail there is a facility on the "home page". Just press "CONTACT US" you will then be taken to the e-mail page where you can write your message.
Visitors who normally take Holy Communion in their own church are welcome to receive the Sacrament at any of our Eucharists. If you are not a communicant you are invited to the altar to receive a blessing from the Priest. If you would like to receive Holy Communion, perhaps consider becoming a full member of the Anglican Church. Please meet with Fr. Danny to discuss Baptism and/or Confirmation preparation.
We have recently purchased a ramp which makes us disabled friendly, this is situated at the front entrance of the Church.
Although we do not at present publish a parish magazine we do have a weekly bulletin which details our activities. If for any reason you cannot get to church or are housebound Fr. Danny will be happy to send you a copy by e-mail, if you would telephone leaving your e-mail address then he will forward you a copy. Your e-mail address will remain confidential. This is one of our ways to keep in touch.
More worship and social events are always in the planning stages for the future but need finalising. As soon as possible these will be published here on our website, so do keep browsing for the updates.
