Swinton and Pendlebury
The parish of Swinton and Pendlebury is one of the largest in the Manchester Diocese in terms of population. It is served by three Anglican churches: St. Peter's, Chorley Road Swinton; St. Augustine's, Bolton Road Pendlebury ; and All Saints', Charles Street, Wardley.
Our worship is rooted in the Catholic tradition within the Church of England, although there is a diversity of traditions within our congregations. The Mass is celebrated daily across the parish and is well and faithfully attended. On weekday festivals the pattern of services is amplified and a Sung Mass is celebrated at 7.30pm, normally at St. Peter's. The sacraments of Healing and Reconciliation are regularly celebrated. Confirmation is offered normally each year and classes to explore and discover the Christian faith are offered beforehand, for both adults and children.
There are large parish branches of devotional guilds such as the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament and the Society of Our Lady of Walsingham, which meet regularly, and other groups such as the Mothers' Union and a parish choir. The annual pilgrimage to Walsingham is a regular feature of the parish calendar.
The parish is under the episcopal care of the Bishop of Beverley and a corporate member of Forward in Faith.
Each church enjoys close links to a church primary school, and uniformed organisations for young people are very active. Each church offers a Sunday School for children during the main Sunday morning mass and young people are also actively involved in the services as singers and altar servers.
Both St. Peter's and St. Augustine's, designed by G.E. Street and G.F. Bodley respectively, are recognised as Victorian buildings of major architectural significance, and we regularly welcome students and other visitors to look around. St. Peter's is listed as Grade II* and St. Augustine's, known as 'The Miners' Cathedral', as Grade I, one of only a few Grade I listed buildings in the City of Salford.
