Saham Toney

About our Parish

The village of Saham Toney with some 700 houses and population of fewer than 2,000 residents is situated in the County of Norfolk. With village records dating back to the Doomsday Book, the Parish covers an area of some 1650 hectares and includes a large lake bordered by trees. The Parish Council, which has been granted ‘Quality Council Status’ meets monthly and is very supportive of all aspects of village activities. Good communication is paramount; the Council maintains an informative Webb-Site and keeps residents up to date with articles and minutes of meetings in the monthly magazine, the ‘SAGA’. The recently compiled Village Appraisal is the voice of the villagers and gives the Council direction for support and future environmental issues. Council Members have recently set up a ‘Community Speed Watch’ with a band of dedicated volunteers giving up their time to operate in conjunction with the Police to make the local roads safer for pedestrians. Another initiative supported by the Council by the provision of land, is the village allotment, this facility promotes exercise, locally produced vegetables and a community spirit for its members, its popularity has now created a waiting list. The village Church of St George with its choir and campanologists’ is a handsome flint building with a bell tower containing six bells and a clock and sits majestically on a hill overlooking the village. This historic building with its beautiful stained glass windows is one of the main focal points of the community. The ‘Friends of St George’s’ the support group that provides financial support for the Parochial Church Council bring members of the village together during the year with their various fund raising events. The village also has a very active Methodist Chapel, another well maintained facility with a supportive congregation that interact with others in the community. Parkers, the Primary school maintains its student numbers. The Parent Teachers Association is active throughout the year in raising funds for additional equipment. When weather permits, ‘a walk to school train’ is organised by the parents who join on foot with their children along the route gaining beneficial exercise, it also reduces the number of vehicles in the school vicinity. The younger children are catered for in a professionally run play group in the Community Centre, outside is a recently installed play park, a superb facility built at a cost of £68,000 from funding grants obtained from various charities by a very dedicated working group of mothers. Saham Toney with a post office and traditional village public house also has a Community Centre; a superb meeting place with dance floor, stage, bar facilities and a kitchen, the centre can accommodate functions on quite a large scale. Various groups meet regularly in the centre as well as the play group, these include the Samsen Club which accommodates the retired, an art group, heritage group, fitness club as well as the Women’s Institute. Another major asset in the village is the Sports Club with its modern pavilion, football and cricket pitch. These two sports are well supported by villagers and are an ideal pastime for their juniors, both the football and cricket clubs each have two teams competitively placed in the local leagues. Saham Toney, with its good community spirit and group activities for all ages is a pleasant place to reside. The village with roots dating back to before the ‘Doomsday Book’ maintains its traditional values and yet has a vision for future needs; truly it is ‘The Pride in the Community’.
