Cuddesdon
About our ParishCuddesdon is a small village made up of three townships - Cuddesdon, Denton and Chippinghurst. The parish of Wheatley was in the parish of Cuddesdon until the 1850s. Cuddesdon was first mentioned in a Charter of 956, but which is much older. It was the site of two Roman villas as well as an important Anglo-Saxon burial. Through the middle ages most of the land belonged to Abingdon Abbey, and after the Reformation it became the home of the Bishops of Oxford from 1637 until 1977. Bishop Samuel Wilberforce built the world-famous Cuddesdon Theological College in his grounds in 1854, which now has about 125 full-time and part-time students.
