Bilton St John & St Luke
About our ParishThe Parish of Bilton St John and St Luke is situated on both sides of Skipton Road in the northern part of the spa town and tourist centre of Harrogate. The parish also contains a number of primary schools and shops, and the population has a varied social mix and is mainly residential.
In the St John's area which is in the northern part of the parish, the eastern and north-eastern side comprises an estate. In the remainder of the area the most common housing are the suburban semi and small bungalows, with a new estate of larger housing to the west of the area. There are cottages and farm buildings scattered throughout the area. There is mention in the Doomsday Book of Bilton Dene.
The southern end of the parish comprises the St Luke's area, and consists of Victorian housing, mainly terraced and semi-detached properties. The north-west of the area has both a small estate and a larger estate, and there are a large number of bedsits and flat conversions in the area. The major employment in the area are the small hotels and guest houses which serve the tourists, trade fairs and concerts at the major international conference and concert centre situated in the southern end of the area.
The Parish of Bilton St John and St Luke is part of the Harrogate Deanery, and has the two community churches of St John the Evangelist, Bilton and St Luke. With the tradition regarded as broad spectrum, worship in both churches is mainly contemporary Common Worship, but other contemporary worship containing a wide variety of music and instruments is also used at St John's Church. The parish uses a wide variety of ministries including schools, children's and youth work, house groups, healing, etc.
