Gillingham: St. Luke

About our Parish

This compact Urban Priority Area parish covers a small part of north Gillingham, from Medway Road and the former MoD land on the west (now occupied by the Mid-Kent College) to Corporation Road in the east. To the south, it includes part of Saunders Street, and the northern part contains the Victory Pier residential development, now nearly complete, with more new building planned for the next few years. Much of the area, however, consists of typical terraced housing of the late 19thC or early 20thC, but there are pockets of more modern dwellings. Many houses are tenanted rather than owner-occupied, and there is an unknown number of 'transient' people who only stay in the parish for a short time. The various Medway University sites are nearby (though not in the parish), so many of the houses accommodate students, who also live in a number of purpose-built units ('Liberty Quays'). It is possible that at least one-third of the parish population at any one time is made up of students, many from overseas! There is one infant/primary school (albeit not a Church School), now in splendid modern accommodation, and an award-winning community centre (the Sunlight Centre) which offers all sorts of activities and groups, as well as a doctors' practice, and an excellent cafe. There is now just one surviving pub in the parish - but it describes itself accurately as a friendly and typical backstreet boozer..... Unusually, there are no residential or nursing homes within the parish, although we hold a monthly Eucharist at Prospect Place, a sheltered housing development. At one time, St. Luke's parish included that part of the former Chatham Naval Dockyard known as St. Mary's Island, but this area (re-developed as upmarket housing) has been absorbed into the neighbouring parish of St. Mark, Gillingham. Construction has now begun on 'Chatham Waters' - yet more new housing, shops etc., on part of the commercial port at the eastern end of the former Naval Yard, so the population of the parish is likely to increase over the next few years. A major recent addition to local facilities has been the opening of a new ASDA superstore......and a new 'family pub and restaurant' is now open, too.

Population: 6000
