Charminster
About our ParishCharminster is a bridging point on the River Cerne just north of the watermeadows that separate it from the county town.
There are a number of older cottages near the church with an established ribbon settlement along North Street.
Post war developments began with Cocklands, which replaced the army camp, followed by Broken Cross, Vicarage Lane and more recently the first-time buyers housing at Meadow View.
Most traffic by-passes on the A37 Yeovil Road or the Old Sherborne Road.
For generations village families looked to the hospital at Herrison for employment but when that closed in favour of 'care in the community' people had to look elsewhere for jobs instead. Herrison was said to be self-sufficient in everything but the coal. When Herrison closed, all the entertainment, social and sporting activities that were associated with it were lost but some of it is returning with the subsequent development of the site for housing.
