Horne
About our ParishThe Parish of Horne covers a very wide, geographical area with scattered groups of housing including Domewood, on the borders of East Grinstead. It is largely a rural community that includes some mixed farms and a number of livery stables and riding schools. The village of Horne is situated to the north east of Smallfield.
There are a number of pleasant walks around the parish - HorneCourt Woods (NT) being well known for its carpet of bluebells in April/May
In addition, a number of houses on the road between Smallfield and Horley fall within the parish as Horne detached. This is mainly farm and woodland. The area is also known as Harrowsley from the once popular Saxon name Hereward (but probably not the famous Hereward the Wake). Earlier, King Alfred held council in the general area known as Thunderfield. This name is remembered in the site called Thunderfield Castle - Probably only a moated manor house which was built by the Norman Clares. Only the moat and mounds are left and this is private land but there are several footpath/bridleways around. This area was later in the 17th Century owned by William an ancestor of the Burberry family famous for their raincoats.
St Mary's Horne shares a benefice with St Bartholomews, Burstow and together with St John's Outwood and Christ Church South Nutfield is part of The Windmill Group ministry.
