Charlestown
About our ParishCharlestown is a very charming 17th century harbour village and is presently home for a fleet of sailing ships. Much of the village retains its 17th century character and is now a consveration area.
Charlestown became a parish in 1849, the building was completed in 1851 (with the exception of the spire and bells). At its centenary in 1951 a granite Nave Altar was added, thought to be one of the first in the country.
Under the leadership of the late A.L. Rowse, funds were raised to complete the tower and spire in 1972. The spire is fibreglass and a very light ring of six bells (3.5 cwt) were cast and installed by Taylors of Loughborough. The treble bell was given by the late Sir Noel Coward and is aptly called `Noel`. To mark the 150th anniversary in 2001, a Lady Chapel was added.
The tradition of the Church is firmly in the catholic wing of the Church of England. Following the decision of the Church of England to allow women to be ordained to the priesthood, the parish, using measures created by the General Synod, voted to come under the Sacramental care of the Bishop of Ebbsfleet and is affiliated to Forward in Faith
The Church is very active in the community and launched the The Alpha Course in 2008; for more details on the course, please contact Daphne Johns on 01726 67544 The average Sunday attendence across all the services is 90 people.
