St. Hilda Halifax
About our ParishWelcome to
St Hilda's Church,
Halifax
St Hilda's is a family church where you can be sure of a very warm welcome.
Our Church is just like any other family: we have children and their parents, grandparents and even great grandparents. We have single people and couples, people with special - all are welcome!
But we have several things in common:
 We love God
We look out for each other
We want to do the best we can to build a better world and serve our community
We don't all look alike or think alike, but this makes for a lively church in which we try to value each other and work together.
Worship:
That's why we're here and our services reflect the varied nature of our family.
Our services are times when we can praise God and gather strength for our everyday lives and we hope that what we do on a Sunday helps us to make sense of the rest of the week.
If we have to put a handle on ourselves, we are middle of the road Church of England. We use props like candles and like to do things properly and with dignity. But there is a huge amount of lay participation in our services and we like to think they include reverence and awe, praise and humour, quietness and sometimes clamour!
Our choir and musicians are great and we use hymns both ancient and modern.
We take a lot of care to ensure that our baptisms, weddings and funerals are user-friendly and personal occasions to remember.
And, because we are concerned about our community, we regularly prayer walk our streets, praying for the people there and asking God to open our eyes to their needs.
Most Sundays children have their own Junior Church when they adjourn to the 'Whitby Room' to explore the day's theme from their own perspective and then join us again for Communion.
There are also Family Communion days and Family Services which might include teddy bears or involve the blessing of pets!
We have a very popular mixed Scout Group which meets on Wednesdays during term time.
Older people:
Are welcomed and valued and included in our activities.
We can arrange transport for those who may have difficulty getting to things and we are fortunate because St Hilda's has very few steps or changes in level.
We can even accommodate wheelchairs without anyone feeling a nuisance!
The New Year senior citizen's party is anticipated with relish.
Outreach:
Our church is concerned about the world and our community and tries to work together with other professionals and volunteers to meet the needs of those around us.
We raise money to support national charities like Christian Aid, the Children's Society and Macmillan Cancer Care and we support a link church in Mara, one of the poorest regions of Africa.
We run a food bank with which we support the Ebenezer Centre's Drop-in centre every Saturday to help local families in need. This work is at the heart of what we do and who we are.
Fun, Fellowship and Fund-raising:
Those are the excuses we use for having a good time generally!
Throughout the year, we are always doing something. It might be a Quiz night or a concert, a walk, a treasure hunt or a party.
We might be manning a stall in Hebden Bridge or tramping through Heptonstall on a car rally.
Or we might be holding a study group: learning about our Muslim neighbours, how to deal with bereavement or hiking through the wilderness with Moses.
We are always looking for ways in which to grow together and its fun.
Too good to be true?
If that's what you're thinking, there's no need to take our word for it, why not come along and find out for yourself?
