The Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments are basic rules given by God by which everyone should try to live their life

I: You shall have no other Gods before Me.

II: You shall not make for yourself a carved image, any likeness of anything that is in Heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or is in the water under the earth.

III: You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

IV: Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

V: Honour your father and your mother.

VI: You shall not murder.

VII: You shall not commit adultery.

VIII: You shall not steal.

IX: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.

X: You shall not covet your neighbour's house, you shall not covet your neighbour's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbour's.

Frequently Asked Question: How does the Tenth Commandment relate to today's modern world?

Answer: To properly answer this we need to consider the actual meaning of the word 'covet'. Quite simply it means to 'feel immoderate desire for that which is another's'. We also have to look at how long ago the Ten Commandments were given by God, in an age when it was not unusual for people of prosperity to have a donkey, an ox, and so on. The Ten Commandments, however long ago they were given, are just as relevant in today's modern world as they were when they were first given by God. Perhaps the donkey could be a BMW car, the female servant could be a supermodel girlfriend, the ox could be a flat screen plasma TV. To understand the Tenth Commandment, people should be paying more attention to the actual meaning of the word 'covet' rather than the listed possessions.
