The Church of St Martin serves the village of Sandford St Martin and hamlet of Ledwell, and is part of the Benefice of Westcote Barton with Steeple Barton, Sandford St Martin and Duns Tew - and since 1st March 2015, also the churches of Over Worton and Nether Worton. Interesting features of this 13th century church include the John Piper lancet window (showing St Martin dividing his cloak to share with a poor beggar), the Norman font, several fine hatchments, and at the back of the chancel arch, a panel displaying the Royal Arms of Queen Elizabeth I dated 1602 - that is, before the uniting of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland.
As part of the combined Benefice it shares with the other churches the Rector, the Organist, the Bartons Benefice Choir, and the Bell-ringing team.
SERVICES & EVENTS: Everyone is very welcome at our services, or to sit in the church for quiet and prayer. Because the six parishes share the one Rector, the services rotate around the Benefice and times and types of services vary from week to week.
Please check our web site www.dornandridgebenefice.org.uk for times of services and special events. A chart for Sunday services can also be found in the Pages & Links section of this ACNY website.
At Sandford St Martin the pattern is as follows:
1st Sunday of the month: 11.00am Matins
2nd Sunday of the month: 6.00pm Evensong (5.00pm Nov-Mar)
3rd Sunday of the month: 8.30am BCP Holy Communion
4th Sunday of the month: 9.30am Eucharist (Contemporary Language) with choir, followed by refreshments
Children are welcome at all services with toys, colouring-in and craft provided, and there is a "Minnows" Sunday School on the 1st Sunday of the month, which meets at 9.15am in Westcote Barton Church, to ring the bell and light the candles before the morning service at 9.30am. They join in for the first hymn and then move on to the Rectory for songs, story and craft.
In addition there is a Pram Service for the whole Benefice, called "Little Tiddlers", in Middle Barton at the Alice Marshall Hall (on the crossroads of Enstone Road and Worton Road). This takes place on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, at 10.30am. It is very family friendly, gently structured with action songs, story, craft, drink and biscuit, and time to play.
We have a Bell-ringing team which rings for most 9.30/11.00am services in the Benefice. New ringers are always welcome! Bell-ringing practice is at Sandford St Martin Church on Thursday nights. Contact phil Sharman (Tower Captain) 01869-340626.
The Bartons Benefice Choir has singers from the whole Benefice, with a full choir of about 15 adults; a smaller choir sings at 9.30am and 11am services in the Benefice. Choir practice is on Monday nights at Jacobs Yard, Middle Barton. Come and join in! More singers always welcome. Contact Trevor Daniels (Choir Leader) 01869 340262.
Throughout the year we hold SPECIAL SERVICES involving the local Middle Barton School Choir and the Scout and Guide groups. These include 5th Sundays and services such as Mothering Sunday, Harvest Festival and Pet Service.
There are also other special services such as at ADVENT & CHRISTMAS and HOLY WEEK & EASTER, Remembrance Sunday, and All Souls. Please look out for further details in the Pages and Links section or our web site www.dornandridgebenefice.org.uk nearer the time.
If anyone would like a home visit or Holy Communion at home, please contact the Rector.
