St. Mary's is a Grade II* Chapel of Ease which is situated in the heart of the village of South Zeal, within the parish of South Tawton.  It probably began life as a medieval Guild Chapel, possibly for weavers, and fell into ruins after the Reformation.  The building was restored as a school in the early 19th century and was later converted into a chapel.  Following extensive restoration in 2002, it now has seating for 25 people.  The building is not consecrated, but is licensed for public worship.  Services are held there regularly once a month and at other occasions.  The building is open to visitors during daylight hours.

Refreshments avialble at South Zeal Stores (a couple of yards down the road on the opposite side) where there is also a toilet.

Public toilets are also provided at South Zeal Recreation Ground Pavilion, where there is also a car park.
