St Anne-in-the-Grove, has a long history which stretches across the divides of the Reformation. Originally situated as part of a house belonging to the lord of the manor, Pope Eugenius IV issued a license in 1440 so the Mass could be offered. Eventually the numbers outgrew the house and so a new church was built on what is now Brookfoot Lane. The current site was used to build a new church in the early 19th century, from where the life and mission of the church to the people of Southowram continues.

The current Vicar is Fr Guy Jamieson who moved into this diocese of Wakefield from the Bradford Diocese in 2003.

St Anne`s is one part of the United Benefice with her sister church of St Thomas`s in neighbouring Claremount. The Parish Mass is sung every Sunday at 9.30am and the Daily Offices are said. There are a variety of occasional, invitation and outreach sevices held throughout the year. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with prayers of Intercession is offered once a week and Benediction is part of the Diary, along with a Rosary group. The Mass is said during the week on Wednesday evenings and Friday lunchtimes, including all saints and festival days (Tuesday evening in Claremount). A Mass with a rite of Healing is offered monthly, as well as a Mass for the Shrine of ur Lady of Walsingham where a number of pilgrims go each Lent. Fr Guy is a Priest Associate of the Shrine. There are a number of Meditations, Quiet Days, courses for beginners, nurture, and other activities run betwen the church, the Diocese, and the Mirfield Centre, Community and College. An ordinand is on attachment with the St Anne`s community from the College. There is a constant ministry to the sick and housebound involving both priest and laity.

Of the activities available for people to take part in there is a choir for both children and adults; a Junior Church; a team of servers, readers, and leaders of Intercessions; an active social and fundraising team; a craft group; musical opportunities; social and pastoral commitments to a care home, local primary school and small business community; an active Churches Together Group involving Roman Catholic, Methodist, Anglican and Orthodox churches. There are Uniformed Organisations who meet in the church hall; a number of our children andn young people are currently enhancing the grounds with a new garden project.

St Anne`s was restored in 2006 after a four year appeal. It features a beautiful rood cross and icon.

The Hall at St Annes is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment. Thanks to the voluntary efforts of the congregation and the support of local businesses, we have been able to install a suspended ceiling; fit new lighting; clean and protect the windows; enlarge the floor space and update the kitchen facilities. We are currently refurbishing the toilets, and creating a disabled access toilet, and there are plans to develop the Hall yet further over the coming years. The Hall is available for use by private parties and is frequently used for childrens birthday parties. There is ample car parking space. Contact Christine Firth on 01422 343932 for details.
