NB this website entry will remain but has now been downgraded
St James' is almost unique in the UK being a joint Catholic and Anglican (CofE) venture. The current church was established in 1976 when the old building reached the end of its natural life. On the same site was built a brand new church building with comfortable modern facilities and ample car parking.
Our mission is to allow the love of God in Jesus Christ to transform our community, starting with ourselves.
All of us connected with St James' believe it is a very special place to worship and find fellowship with other Christians, not to mention those who are just browsing! People comes from across the town to worship with us - will you be one of them? Those of us based in the Anglican tradition have a wide experience and understanding of how we can worship God. Some of us are catholic and like 'bells and smells', others among us more 'non-conformist'. In that sense, you could say we are the Church of England in a nutshell! But what we all have in common is a desire to become more like Jesus Christ, and worship him both in church and in the rest of our life.
We offer an especially warm welcome to young families and try very hard to help parents and children alike deepen their faith in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere. Our Family Communion services are wonderful occasions; bright and cheerful with lots of things to keep active children absorbed and happy. These happen on the first Sunday of the month during school term-time. We have also introduced Lay Led services every other month which are led by members of the congregation. They are excellent opportunities for individuals to stretch their legs in leading worship and/or speaking in public about aspects of their faith.
In addition to our on-site, shared identity, we enjoy excellent relationships with other churches in Downley and across the rest of High Wycombe. Expressions of this are found in joint schools work, running services at a local Nursing Home and regular meetings for Ministers during which we pray for our community and discuss important subjects.
We provide a warm welcome to all and would love to meet you, even if you're in the area for only a short time.
Please note that this entry refers to the Church of England congregation ONLY
