Our church, built on the site of a medieval chapel, was consecrated in 1829 as a Chapel of Ease for the community of Newport within the parish of Bishops Tawton. The parish of Newport became independent in 1847 and the church, "a barn-like structure" (North Devon Journal) in urgent need of repair, was restructured in 1881 resulting in our present church which was completed in 1882.
Over the years numerous improvements have been made. Recently the church has been re-ordered and is now a warm and comfortable building used for many varied activities. We have carpet, chairs, new heating, a new sound system and a kitchen.
Local schools visit the church on a regular basis and we take "Open the Book" out to two primary schools. There is a monthly magazine and a weekly news sheet. Concerts and Diocesan courses are held here throughout the year.
A church hall was built adjacent to the church in the 1960's and this is much in demand, resulting in almost constant daily use.
Our vision for the church at Newport is to build on our present strengths and fulfill our Mission Statement which is :
"To work together to proclaim God's love in our ourselves and in our community".
