St.John's Church has been a centre for Christian
worship and service in the Anglican style for over
170 years on kates Hill. The old church building
was built in the Victorian style, mimicking the
older Medieval 'Perpendicular Gothic' pattern of
the mid-fifteenth century.
Sadly, shortly into the new millennium, the church
building was deemed unsafe for public worship and
the doors were locked on congregation and public
alike. Although this was a cause of great sadness
to the congregation and community, the true spirit
of the Church of Christ was not defeated and the
service patterns and worship at St. John's
continued without missing a beat by transferring
to the Parish halls just across the road.
Today a new future for the old building is being
discussed between the Diocese, the Parish, local
councillors and the local community group; St.
John's Preservation Group(SJPG). With
determination and God's generosity, we all hope to
see something good and new being reborn out of the
ashes of despair.
Nevertheless the Church at Kates hill carries on
whether in a old or new building. As Christians
we see Christ as the foundation of the Church and
the people of Christ are the bricks and mortar.
So,in reality, buildings are just there to keep
out the weather.
Many people are uncertain as to the future of the
burial grounds at St. John's; the simple answer is
that they will continue to have a separate
identity from the old building and are at no risk
from any changes it may undergo. Having said that,
it is still necessary to keep up the grounds work
on the churchyard as it soon gets overgrown.
Again the SJPG and the local community services
have helped organise and man a vigilant war on the
growth, and have succeeded in making the churchyard
more accessible than it has been in many years.
So if you haven't been for a wander through our
beautiful Churchyard with its magnificent views of
Dudley, the Castle and the surrounding counties,
be sure to visit soon and receive a 'Bostin' Black
Country welcome
