A few years ago, some of the Christians at St Mary's felt that there was a gap in the services provided and that the provision of a more informal service with contemporary music would attract people who otherwise would not be interested in exploring Christian faith issues. Worship the Lord was born out of that belief and from Worship the Lord the Praise Be! band was born; we have grown in both musical competence and spiritual maturity over the past four years, or so.
St Mary's Church is committed to reaching out with the Word of the Gospel to all sections of the community and our 'Worship the Lord' service was just one of our responses to this challenge. Worship the Lord (WTL) is a service for those people who prefer a more contemporary feel to their worship; the music features songs written by composers such as Matt Redman, Tim Hughes, Robin Mark and Brian Doerksen. WTL took place on the third Sunday each month, commencing at 6 p.m.; the service lasted around an hour and aimed to provide an opportunity for people to get to know the Lord through prayer, Gospel teaching and worship. We really believe in God's power to transform people's lives and want to know how each one of us can make a difference for Christ, as His power, presence and purpose energizes Christians, recognizing how God wants to develop and use each person in the furtherance of His plan.
We now believe that it is time to change the format, as people were telling us that they found it difficult to get to services at 6pm on Sunday evening, especially in winter. We see this type of worship as an integral part of providing a wide range of worship for the church family but also as an outreach to people in the community, encouraging people through music, who otherwise may not see the relevance of Christianity in their lives.
We will be holding musical events around once a quarter, with a modern theme; they will not be what most people would think of as Services, but events where people are encouraged to get closer to God through Jesus Christ. We are calling this event 'Mostly Music' and it will feature music from Praise Be! (future events will, we hope, feature other Christian groups) and short prayer with a message. We do not intend to challenge people, but hope to raise their curiosity. We also hope to provide coffee/tea facilities and cake & biscuits during the event. These events will include members of the church family so that non church people who attend can gain an insight into how Christianity can affect lives and talk with Christians about anything in a non-threatening situation. Hopefully those coming will also enjoy the music etc.
The first event will be held at St Marys Church on Saturday 24 September 2011 at 11am; it will last for approximately one hour and we shall be distributing tickets very soon. There will be a collection and any funds raised on the day will be sent to Famine Relief charities operating in Africa.
Praise Be! band hope this has given you some idea of what we are trying to achieve and how we are hoping we can use the talent He gave us to move God's Kingdom forward in Baldock.
We will also be playing in events around Baldock as well as in St Marys Church throughout the year; see below for our itinerary and come & see us!
