St Matthews is a friendly and traditional parish church which welcomes people from all traditions – or none. Our services are distinctive within the local area for the use of the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) at most services. We find it has a beauty of language that is hard to match and it helps us to engage with the beauty and holiness of God.
Whilst the liturgy is traditional, the atmosphere is always friendly, welcoming, informal and inclusive and we hope this will be your experience also.
We encourage children to experience our services in full or part and we offer a creche and Sunday School during our 11am service throughout the year.
We have a less formal midweek service to suit the busy Londoner, with food, a time to think together and a short act of worship on Wednesday nights at 7:15pm.
St Matthew's is an Anglican church built in 1882 in the heart of Bayswater, it has an imposing presense on the streetscape with its detailed front facade and one of the tallest spires in London
The church, a Grade II* listed building in Victorian Gothic Revival style, was built by John Johnson II, financed by John Derby Allcroft of Stokesay Court Shropshire. It was completed in 1882, replacing an earlier church dating from 1818, and was built to house the huge congregation that flocked to hear the then incumbent, Archdeacon Hunter.
Inside it is unusually wide (wider than Westminster Abbey) and very light due to the clerestory windows and pale stone. Other features include a pair of stained glass windows by William Morris and Co., designed by Burne-Jones and a large 1913 Walker organ.
