St Mary the Virgin is part of the Benefice of Westcote Barton with Steeple Barton, Sandford St Martin and Duns Tew, and since 1st March 2015, also of Over Worton with Nether Worton. It is the largest of our six churches. It is set in the beautiful and peaceful surroundings of fields overlooking the large house and lake called Barton Abbey. Inside the church are 14th century pillars with carved heads, and one has the unusual North Oxfordshire feature of linked arms.
The church is a respected part of the community, contributing to village life through commitment to many village activities and organisations. Although the local school has no formal church ties there are good church links with the Middle Barton Primary School and Pre-school.
SERVICES & EVENTS:
Everyone is very welcome at our services, or to sit in the church or churchyard for quiet and prayer. Because the six parishes share the one Rector, the services rotate around the Benefice and times and types of services vary from week to week. A chart showing Sunday Services can be found in the Pages & Links section. Please also check our Web Site www.dornandridgebenefice.org.uk.
At Steeple Barton the pattern is as follows:
1st Sunday of the month: 8.30am BCP Holy Communion
2nd Sunday of the month: 9.30am Eucharist (contemporary language) with choir, followed by coffee
3rd Sunday of the month: 11.00am Eucharist (traditional language)
4th Sunday of the month: No service
Children are welcome at all services with toys, colouring-in and craft provided, and there is a "Minnows" Sunday school on the 1st Sunday of the month, meeting at 9.15am in Westcote Barton Church, to ring the bells and light the candles before the morning service begins at 9.30am. They join in for the first hymn and then move on to the Rectory for songs, story and craft.
In addition there is a Pram Service, "Little Tiddlers", on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month at 10.30am, at the Alice Marshall Hall (crossroads of Enstone road and Worton Road). It is very family friendly, gently structured with action songs, story, prayer, craft, drink and biscuit, and time for play.
On the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month there is Midweek Communion (Book of Common Prayer), at the home of a parishioner.
2nd Wednesday it is held at 18 Washington Terrace, Middle Barton, at 10am.
4th Wednesday it is held at "Dinghams", Hill Farm Lane, Duns Tew, at 10.30am.
All are welcome. For more details please contact The Rectory 01869 340510.
If you are unable to attend Services but would like Holy Communion brought to your home, or if you would like transport to a Service, please contact the Rector: The Rev’d Graeme Arthur 01869 – 340510
We have an enthusiastic Bell Ringing team which rings for most 9.30 and 11.00am services in the Benefice. New ringers are always welcome! Bell ringing practice is at Sandford St Martin Church on Thursday nights. Contact Phil Sharman (Tower Captain) 01869-340626.
The Bartons Benefice Choir has singers from the whole benefice, with a full choir of about 15 adults; a smaller choir sings at 9.30am services in the Benefice. Choir practice is on Monday nights at Jacobs Yard, Middle Barton, 8.00-9.30pm. Come and join in! More singers always welcome. Contact Trevor Daniels (Choir Leader) 01869 340262.
Throughout the year we hold SPECIAL SERVICES involving the local Middle Barrton School Choir and the Scout and Guide groups. These include 5th Sundays of the month, and services such as Mothering Sunday, Harvest Festival and Pet Service.
There are also other special services such as at ADVENT & CHRISTMAS, and the HOLY WEEK & EASTER services (including the family friendly Good Friday Walk telling the Easter Story in drama and song), Remembrance Sunday, and All Souls. Look out for details in the Pages & Links section, or our Web Site (www.dornandridgebenefice.org.uk) nearer the time.
