Cuthman Lecture
Thursday 31st May 2012, 7.30pm Penfold Hall, Church Street, Steyning This Lecture will form part of the Steyning Festival 2012 FREE tickets are available from Steyning Bookshop. There will be a retiring collection. Rev Clare Herbert, Lecturer in Inclusive Theology, St Martin-in-the Fields Wither and What? The word inclusion is used a great deal in contemporary church jargon. But what does it mean and what are the stepping stones towards it and the sinking sands along the way? Clare was among the first wave of women to be ordained priest in the Church of England in 1994. Since then she has worked as Pastoral Care Adviser in the Diocese of London, Rector of St Anne's Church Soho, National Co-ordinatorof the charity Inclusive Church, and is Lecturer in Inclusive Theology at St Martin in the Fields. She came to Priesthood from a background in social work so has been keen to develop a ministry of pastoral care and pastoral education. She is well known as a public speaker around the issues of inclusion and achieved a certain notoriety in the honesty with which, as an "out lesbian", she met the questions of Olivia O’Leary in "Between Ourselves", a Radio 4 interview, in 2010. She is a member of the General Synod of the Church of England and is currently studying for a PhD (Professional Doctorate in Practical Theology) with the Cambridge Federation of Colleges and Anglia Ruskin University.
