4.1 Our Scout Group
1ST OLD MALDEN (St. John the Baptist) SCOUT GROUP
1st Old Malden (John the Baptist) Scout Group has served the young people in the ancient parish of Old Malden since 1950 and is an active, friendly, family Scout Group. We aim at giving “Better Scouting for More Young People in Old Malden” and have a membership of over 100 Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts and Scouts. In 2005, we were awarded the “County Commissioner’s Standard”; a local Scouting kitemark which recognises good quality, organised Scouting.
We run an exciting weekly programme with the focus on adventure, whilst providing the opportunity to develop friendships and understanding of others in a fun, exciting and safe way. We take part in District events like fun days, camps, competitions. Our young people are involved in national contests – eg. airgun shooting – and several are also members of our local Scout and Guide Band, one of the best in the country.
Our own headquarters, the Old Malden Scout Centre, is situated behind St. John’s Church Hall in Malden Road and was built with the help of National Lottery funding in 2002. It has been the catalyst in us being able to improve our facilities, equipment and activities ever since.
The Group is “sponsored” by St. John’s, so is very much an integral part of the life and outreach of the parish.
We regularly recruit new Beavers, Cubs and Scouts - boys and girls aged 6 through to 18. We are also always on the lookout for new leaders and helpers too.
